Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) –
A Minimally Invasive Alternative to Surgery

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for women suffering from fibroid-related symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating, or frequent urination.

At University Radiology, our fellowship-trained interventional radiologists specialize in performing UFE using image-guided techniques that shrink fibroids and preserve the uterus — often with faster recovery and fewer risks than traditional surgery.

How UFE Works

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, non-surgical procedure that treats fibroids by blocking their blood supply, causing the fibroids to shrink. During the UFE procedure, a small catheter is guided into the arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. Tiny particles are injected to block these vessels, cutting off the fibroid's blood supply. Over time, fibroids shrink and symptoms improve — without the need for hysterectomy or major surgery.

Benefits of UFE

  • No Surgery
  • General anesthesia not typically required
  • Faster recovery compared to myomectomy or hysterectomy
  • Typically same day procedure or overnight hospital stay
  • Covered by most health insurance plans

Who is a candidate for UFE?

You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids
  • Experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Have pelvic pain or pressure
  • Prefer a non-surgical option to hysterectomy or myomectomy

Our interventional radiologists will review your medical history and imaging to determine whether UFE is right for you.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus and affect up to 80% of women.

Clinical studies show that UFE provides substantial improvement in major symptoms, including pelvic pain and discomfort, heavy menstrual bleeding, and urinary problems.

of women report improvement in sexual function, including pain, desire, arousal and satisfaction year following UFE.

UFE is often a good option for women who need treatment for fibroid symptoms, but want to avoid a hysterectomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)?

UFE is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that blocks the blood supply to uterine fibroids, causing them to shrink. It's performed by interventional radiologists using a tiny catheter — no major surgery required.

How long does the UFE procedure take?

Most UFE procedures take about 60–90 minutes, and patients usually go home the same day or stay overnight for observation.

What is the recovery time after UFE?

Recovery is typically 5–7 days, much faster than surgical alternatives like hysterectomy or myomectomy. Mild cramping and fatigue are common for a few days post-procedure.

Will I still have my uterus after UFE?

Yes. UFE preserves the uterus, making it an excellent choice for women who wish to avoid hysterectomy.

Does insurance cover UFE?

In most cases, yes — UFE is a widely recognized and medically approved treatment for uterine fibroids. Check with your insurance provider or our staff for confirmation.

Who performs UFE?

UFE is performed by board-certified interventional radiologists at University Radiology who specialize in image-guided, minimally invasive procedures.

What Women Are Saying About UFE

"Life is so much more full, happy, and wonderful since I've had UFE. I have a lot of energy. I get to go out with my friends and enjoy life like I did before I had fibroids."
— Gwen
"My experience with University Radiology was very positive. When I was trying to seek treatment in other places I just felt like I was being dismissed. I oftentimes felt like it was my fault that I had fibroids. That I was wasting people's time because I was trying to figure out what I was going to do."
— Carmen
"A hysterectomy should not be a first choice unless it's medically necessary. UFE is minimally invasive and I only needed one procedure. Above all, it gave me back my life."
— Shelly
