Robert E. Epstein, MD, FACR
Chairman of the Board
Robert E. Epstein, MD is a board certified diagnostic radiologist specializing in Musculoskeletal Imaging and MRI. In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Epstein serves as Chairman of the Board of University Radiology Group. In this capacity, Dr. Epstein leads the second largest private radiology practice in the U.S., with over 1.8 million studies performed and interpreted each year at 9 major medical centers, 20 private imaging offices, and a client-driven teleradiology division. The practice is structured on an established subspecialization model staffed by more than 140 radiologists 24/7/365 and stands as one of the most subspecialized radiology practices in the nation. >
Dr. Epstein received a dual BS & BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts & Sciences and The Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. He received his medical degree from Duke University. Dr. Epstein completed his radiology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a fellowship in MRI and Musculoskeletal Imaging at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Epstein maintains academic appointments at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Radiology and Orthopedics. He is the Director of Musculoskeletal Education for the Residents and medical students and has numerous teaching awards, publications and presentations in his field of expertise. He has been recognized many times as a “Top Doctor” in both New Jersey and New York.
From 2000-2005, Dr. Epstein served as Medical Director of the Laurie Imaging MRI Center, one of the first and highest volume centers in NJ. He has served on the Board of Directors of University Radiology Group since 2001, and was the President of University Radiology from 2004 to 2013. In 2013, Dr. Epstein was elected to serve as Chairman of the Board, a newly created position at University Radiology and remains in that position today. <
Sandip Basak, MD
Sandip Basak, MD is a board certified diagnostic radiologist specializing in Neuroradiology. In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Basak is the President of University Radiology Group with general management oversight of all clinical and operational activities of the organization.
Dr. Basak received his undergraduate degree from New York University and his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. After his medical school graduation in 1996, Dr. Basak completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He then went onto Diagnostic Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia where he was chief resident from 1999-2000. After completing a two year fellowship in Neuroradiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, he received a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology in 2003. >
Dr. Basak has been a subspecialty radiologist with University Radiology Group since 2003 during which time he has held various positions of management within the organization including Board of Director’s trustee since 2007, Executive Committee member since 2013, and Co-Chairman of University Radiology’s Clinical Operations Committee from 2016-2019.
Dr. Basak has also been active in academics during his time at University Radiology. He maintains an academic appointment as Clinical Associate Professor at RUTGERS Robert Wood Johnson Medical (RWJMS). He was Associate Program Director for the RUTGERS RWJMS Diagnostic Radiology Residency from 2009 -2011 and the Program Director from 2011-2015. He is currently the Director of the Noninterpretive Skills Curriculum for the residency program and is a member of the RUTGERS RWJMS Residency Selection Committee. <
Martin A. Bieber, MHA, CPA
Chief Executive Officer
Martin A. Bieber, an accomplished healthcare executive with more than 30 years’ experience in senior leadership positions, joined University Radiology as Chief Executive Officer in February 2017. Marty’s distinguished career includes top-level positions in hospitals and healthcare systems throughout New Jersey and New York. Most recently, he served as Interim President & CEO of East Orange General Hospital. In 2013, he launched a consulting career after stepping down as the President & CEO of Kennedy Health System, a three-hospital system with 900 physicians and 4,200 employees based in Voorhees, NJ.
Prior to leading Kennedy Health, Marty served as the President & CEO of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, NY, and as Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY. He also held VP level positions at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. >
A member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Marty is a certified public accountant (CPA) in the State of New York. He earned his Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from the New School for Social Research and his undergraduate degree in business at Bernard M. Baruch College also in New York.
Marty brings to University Radiology a wealth of experience managing the clinical, technical and revenue cycle teams of large, high quality healthcare enterprises. His deep understanding of the regional healthcare market, as well as his experience with launching new initiatives that deliver high quality, cost effective care, makes Marty an ideal candidate to lead University Radiology into the future. <
Randy Gerstl, CPA
Chief Financial Officer
Randy Gerstl, CPA was named Chief Financial Officer for University Radiology Group in January 2016 after the Group’s merger with Associated Radiologists, also located in New Jersey. Mr. Gerstl has over 25 years of experience in Healthcare Business and Finance leadership. He was the Chief Administrative Officer for Associated Radiologists, where he was responsible for all aspects of finance, operations and marketing. Prior to joining Associated Radiologists, he was a Senior Manager in the healthcare department of Moore Stephens, CPA, where he consulted for clients in business, finance and tax matters.
As CFO of University Radiology Group, Mr. Gerstl has responsibility for finance, accounting, treasury, and budgets for University Radiology Group and their partner companies. Besides financial matters, he brings experience in managed care contracting, regulatory compliance, and imaging center construction, development and operations. >
Mr. Gerstl is a Certified Public Accountant. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Radiology Business Managers Association. As a Past President of the RBMA’s New Jersey Chapter, he has presented numerous talks on relative issues to the radiology community. <
Alberto Goldszal, MBA, PhD
Chief Technology Officer
Alberto Goldszal, MBA, PhD is a healthcare professional with more than 20 years of experience in operations management, imaging sciences, medical informatics, and big data processing and analysis. As Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Goldszal is currently responsible for the overall informatics strategy goals of the University Radiology Group - one of the largest academic-based radiology groups in the country.
Dr. Goldszal received the Moore Fellow Award in the Management of Technology at the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania (2005) and the Shock Award for pioneering research on the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease at the National Institute on Aging at the NIH (1997). Dr. Goldszal has written several peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and abstracts. Affiliations include IEEE, AAAS, RSNA and SIIM. Training credentials include a PhD in Engineering (Digital Image Processing) and a Management of Technology degree jointly awarded by Penn Engineering and the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania. >
In addition to his work at the Group, Dr. Goldszal is also an Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. Past faculty appointments include passages at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (2000-2007), Johns Hopkins University (1995-1997), and at Drexel University (1989-1994). Areas of expertise include operations management, imaging informatics, data mining and analytics, medical imaging technology, healthcare data exchanges, patient engagement, and the meaningful use of health information systems. <
James M. Maher
Chief Revenue Officer
James M. Maher was named Chief Revenue Officer for University Radiology in March 2016, after previously serving as the practice’s Interim Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Maher joined the Group in 2013 with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare finance in multiple hospital senior leadership positions. As Chief Revenue Officer, Mr. Maher directs all Revenue Cycle and Third Party contracting efforts for the group. He also serves as an in-house consultant for multiple practice initiatives — ranging from mergers and acquisitions, business valuations, business analytics and process improvement initiatives.
Prior to joining University Radiology, Mr. Maher served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital — Hamilton, a 230-bed community hospital. His previous leadership positions include Vice President of Finance, Raritan Bay Medical Center; Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, East Orange General Hospital; and Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Carrier Foundation, a regional behavioral healthcare system. >
Mr. Maher earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Rider University and has been a Certified Public Accountant in New Jersey and past member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the New Jersey Hospital Association CFO Constituency Group. <
Franca Maiorano-Hobbs, Esq.
General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer
Franca Maiorano-Hobbs, Esq., General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for University Radiology Group, P.C., graduated from St. John’s University in Queens, New York, summa cum laude, and from St. John’s School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in the states of New Jersey and New York.
After graduating from law school, Mrs. Maiorano-Hobbs entered private practice specializing in civil litigation with a subspecialty in medical malpractice litigation. Mrs. Maiorano-Hobbs became the General Counsel for University Radiology in 2006, and since that time has negotiated the Group’s hospital contracts, radiology service and employment contracts, and professional and general liability insurance renewals. She has responsibility for the closing of all financing transactions and for compliance with Department of Health licensing matters. Mrs. Maiorano-Hobbs has been instrumental in managing and accomplishing the Group’s many mergers and acquisitions and serves as an active advisor to the Senior Leadership Team on a wide range of corporate issues.
Laurie Labaska, PHR/SHRM-CP
Chief Human Resources Officer
Laurie Labaska, PHR, SHRM-CP is the Chief Human Resources Officer for University Radiology Group. Ms. Labaska joined the Group in 2013, with a focus to build an effective human resource function across the practice by aligning human resource activities with business goals. Ms. Labaska directs all Human Resources functions with a general focus in talent acquisition, management development, compensation and benefits, performance management and employee relations.
Prior to joining University Radiology, Ms. Labaska held positions of increasing responsibility in the Human Resources field. She spent twelve years as the Global Director of Human Resources with CoreLab Partners, a CRO focused on image interpretation for pharmaceutical oncologic clinical trials. In this role, she developed and directed the HR function across 5 offices in 3 continents. >
Ms. Labaska received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Delaware. She holds a certificate in Advanced Human Resource studies from Cornell University, a certificate in Employee Relations from Rutgers University and a certificate in Healthcare Compliance from Seton Hall School of Law. Additionally, Ms. Labaska is Certified by HCRI as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and by the Society of Human Resource Management as a SHRM-CP. <
Robert P. Braun
Chief Operating Officer
Robert P. Braun, MA, M.Ed., RN, OCN, RT (R) (T) is the Chief Operating Officer for University Radiology. Mr. Braun joined the Group in 2020 with a focus on the management and oversight of our expanding outpatient imaging offices. His scope of responsibilities include: imaging office operations, facilities/infrastructure management, imaging equipment management, service engineering and nursing. His responsibilities include planning; directing, administering and coordinating URG’s imaging office operations. >
Mr. Braun joins URG with a rich background and an impressive career path. His roots are in radiology and oncology, where he worked clinically as a technologist, nurse and therapist. He studied Healthcare Administration and Nursing at Manhattan College and Felician University, earning duel undergraduate degrees and his R.N and RT., early in his career. He earned master’s degrees in Education/Management and Interdisciplinary Studies from Penn State University and California State University, respectively. In addition to his executive career, Mr. Braun has taught extensively on the collegiate level including serving as an adjunct professor for the Graduate Division at Rutgers University within their Radiologist Assistant master’s program. He has been a frequent guest speaker at many professional association events in addition to writing over 30 peer reviewed publications.
Mr. Braun has held progressively more responsible executive positions over twenty years with Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, CentraState Healthcare System, RWJ Barnabas Health System and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. His most recent position prior to URG was with Regional Cancer Care Associates, where he served as Corporate V.P. of Operations/Integration/Strategy. <
